JOAN MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Joan Moore was the first woman to serve on the Board of Aldermen in the City of Melrose during the Twentieth Century. Mrs. Moore was a pioneer who opened the door to women in the political process in Melrose.

Mrs. Moore was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1922. While serving in the Women’s Royal Australian Service (WRAN) she met and married James Moore, who was then serving in the U.S, Army, Following the war, the Moores returned to the United States and began their family.

In 1956, the Moore family moved to Melrose, and Mrs. Moore plunged into the political and social life of the community with enthusiasm. Mrs. Moore was active in the Mother’s Club, Incarnation Parish, the Democratic City Committee, the Melrose Historical Society and the League of Women Voters. Mrs. Moore was president of the League of Women Voters in 1969. She was also an active tennis player and member of the Bellevue Country Club.

After raising five children, Mrs. Moone resumed her education at UMass, Boston and was awarded her Bachelors Degree, summa cum laude, in 1975. The following year, Joan began her campaign for a seat on the Board of Aldermen. Few will forget the sight of this petite, cheerful woman riding her bike through the streets of ward four, greeting all who looked her way.

As a wife, mother, civic leader, government official and exceptional friend and citizen, Joan Moore has left her mark on everyone who was privileged to know her.

In November of 1982, the League of Women Voters in Melrose chose to act as sponsor for the establishment of a permanent scholarship to honor the memory of Joan Moore.

The Scholarship, to a graduate of Melrose High School, with a preference to a person returning to higher education after a hiatus of some years, will be a lasting tribute to a much loved and admired Melrosian.

THE MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL PERMANENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND congratulates you upon receiving this memorial scholarship. The founders of this scholarship will always be interested in your plans and progress.
