Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund
THE DR. WILLIAM G. MARCOUX SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Marcoux was born in Melrose on October 14, 1914, and was a life long resident. He graduated from Melrose High School in the Class of 1931, Harvard College in 1935, and from Tufts Medical School in 1939.
During World War II, he served for forty-four months with the Army Medical Corps. He then returned to Melrose and for twenty-eight years he served the community as family Practitioner and Surgeon.
He was married to Marguerite Kerr. They lived with their six children at the corner of East Emerson Street and Bellevue Avenue where Dr. Marcoux had his professional office.
The children are: Dr. Wiliam G., Veterinarian, of Salem, New Hampshire; Frank, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Burlington, Vermont; Mrs. Sue Robinson, of North Andover, Massachusetts; Mrs. Denise Dolloft, in Pennsylvania; Mrs, Jeannie Knight of Beverty, Massachusetts; and Mrs. Meredith Osborn, who resides in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Dr. Marcoux served as Vice President of the Middlesex East Medical Society, was a member of the American Medical Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, Fidelity Lodge of Masons, the Melrose Fish & Game Club, and the First Congregational Church of Melrose. On December 7, 1972, he received the Sgt. Harold O. Young V.F.W. Post 2349’s “Man of the Year” Award.
An avid interest in sports always characterized Dr. Marcoux’s Life. He followed and supported high school athletics, and served as team physician for many sports. He was Director of the Melrose Junior Reds Hockey Program.
When Dr. William G. Marcoux passed away on September 20, 1973, he left a legacy of participation in the life of Melrose. His devoted professional service, his affiliation with the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, his loyalty to the Melrose High School, and his participation in civic organizations made this man’s outstanding character an integral part of this community.
