THE LIEUTENANT STEPHEN ANDREW GROARK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Lieutenant Stephen Andrew Groark Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in May 1983 and sponsored by family, neighbors, and friends.
Steve was born in Boston and moved to Melrose as a youth. He was the oldest of Seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Paul C. Groark.
Practically his whole Life was Spent as a Student. His elementary education was at Ripley and St. Mary’s, then Melrose Junior and Senior High Schools. He graduated in 1977 and was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Club, and the Aviation Club. His academic excellence earned him a Congressional appointment to the Air Force Academy.
Outside of School he enjoyed many activities Locally; including Scouting, CYO, baseball, youth hockey, golf, hunting, fishing, and rifle competition.
At the Air Force Academy he developed academically, militarity, athletically, and Spiritually. He was on the Dean’s List and Commandant’s List all eight Semesters and was a distinguished graduate in 1981. He also qualified as a glider pilot instructor, won his Parachute Wings and was Listed in “Who’s Who” Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
He completed his Ain Force training as a distinguished graduate at Navigation School, got top honors as a Weapons System Officer and in England, final flight crew training and certification. Six days Later he died in a military aircraft accident.
This Scholarship is awarded in Steve’s memory hoping that this spirit of dedication, excellence, and achievement will be carried on by the youth of Melrose in a field of their choice.
