MELROSE ROTARY CLUB

Rotary was started in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois by Paul Harris. Paul, a man eager to learn from others, invited a group of business associates to his office one noon time and continued meeting weekly in different offices of his associates–thus, the name Rotary.

Melrose was sponsored by the Lynn Club in 1921 and was the 1009th club to join what is now a vast international organization.

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First, the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

Second, high ethical standards in business and professions: the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society.

Third, the application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life.

Fourth, the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional men united in the ideal of service.

The four parts of this objective have given rise to many things; in one way or another, they are behind everything a club or an individual does. They are in essence, the navigation chart, the sailing directions for adventures moving in the direction of new horizons–new horizons holding the promise of a neighborly world based upon the dignity and worth of every man.
