Dorothy Hosmer Parker Memorial Scholarship
May 30, 1923 – October 18, 2000
Melrose High School, Class of 1941
The Children, Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren established this scholarship to honor Dottie Hosmer Parker. Dottie was blessed with the gifts of creativity, pure artistic talent, and a dream. Her dream was to attend art school. Because of financial difficulties and the onset of World War II, Dottie’s girlhood dream was never fulfilled – at least not as she originally envisioned.
Although circumstances prevented Dottie from pursuing her formal art education, she sought and found alternative outlets where she continued to learn more about art by sharing her own. Throughout her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, employee, and citizen of Melrose, Dottie encountered many opportunities to utilize her artistic talents. Many local civic groups, employers, youth activities, and even Dottie’s church benefited from her imagination and talent. She seized every chance life presented her to share her skills. Whether she was painting a “one-of-a kind” publicity poster, crafting items for sale, planning the entire decorative renovation of a friend’s home, or simply helping to decorate her church for a special event, Dottie enjoyed the entire experience – and her enthusiasm was contagious. She had a wonderful laugh and sense of humor.
Dottie’s family sincerely hopes that this scholarship helps to enable recipient(s) to pursue her/his personal dreams. We wish each recipient every success in your education and your future. We are confident that Dottie would be cheering for you!
