Biography of Walter G. Creedon

Walter G. Creedon, a dedicated educator, patriot, and beloved family man, lived a life marked by service, passion, and love. Born on June 24, 1927, in Medford, Massachusetts, he was the son of John and Irene Creedon. Walter’s early years were spent in Arlington, Massachusetts, where he attended local schools and developed a lifelong love for learning and service.

In 1945, as World War II drew to a close, Walter left Arlington High School during his senior year to join the US Coast Guard. His commitment to serving his country continued beyond the war, as he later served in the US Coast Guard Reserve, ultimately attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

After the war, Walter completed his high school education and pursued higher studies at Bridgewater State Teachers College. During summers, he worked on Nantucket Island, where he met his first wife, with whom he had three children: Gregory, Martha, and Peter. Furthering his commitment to education, Walter earned a Master of Education from Salem State College.

Walter dedicated over 30 years to teaching mathematics in the Melrose public schools, impacting countless junior high students at the Roosevelt, Coolidge, and Junior High Schools. His teaching career was distinguished by his passion for education and his dedication to his students.

In 1970, Walter’s life took a joyous turn when he met Ellie, the love of his life. They married in 1973, beginning a remarkable journey that spanned nearly five decades. Together, they explored the world, traveling across the western United States, Africa, Europe, Russia, Ukraine, and many other places, creating a lifetime of memories.

Upon retiring from teaching in 1988, Walter embraced new adventures with enthusiasm. He obtained his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. His fascination with aviation and the Coast Guard inspired him to build numerous airplane and ship models.

Walter was an active community member in Wakefield, where he was known for his kindness and generosity. He was an avid bird feeder and a regular visitor to the Beebe Library, where he indulged in his love for graphic novels, military history, and mysteries. He enjoyed walking through his neighborhood, always ready with treats for the dogs he encountered and engaging in friendly conversations with neighbors.

Walter’s greatest joy and legacy was the love he shared with Ellie. Whether sitting on their porch, reading in the living room, or discussing the day’s events, their bond was a testament to their deep affection and companionship.

Walter’s warmth, humor, and love touched the lives of his friends and family, leaving a lasting legacy of kindness and compassion.
