Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund
THE HELEN V. KNORR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP which you have received this year was first established in 1977 by Mrs. Nancy Vose and Ellen Creedon who were faculty members at Melrose Junior High School with Ms. Knorr.
Ms. Knorr graduated from Eastern High School in Baltimore, Maryland in 1961 and continued her formal education at Hood College in Maryland. Before coming to Melrose, Ms. Knorr was a junior high school Social Studies teacher in Baltimore County from 1965 to 1967. Ms. Knorr was a Social Studies teacher at the Coolidge School from 1967-1969 and continued her teaching career at Melrose Junior High School from 1970 to 1976.
Having known Helen during much of the time she taught in Melrose, Sheila Strain, a guidance counselor at Melrose Junior High School, recalled that “she always displayed an interest in the various academic and extra-curricular activities of students even if it was not in her ‘line of duty’. She felt that education after high school was very important, and that education did not just include the academic areas, but also involvement in extracurricular activities.”
While teaching in Melrose, Ms. Knorr was active as a Tri-Hi-Y Advisor at the Melrose YMCA, supervised the school newspaper at Coolidge School and acted as an advisor to the Student Council at the Junior High School. Ms. Knorr was known by all who knew her as a concerned and dedicated educator.
Therefore, this scholarship has been awarded to you this year as a living tribute to the memory of Helen V. Knorr and the ideals which she expressed and lived by.
THE MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL PERMANENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND congratulates you upon receiving this memorial scholarship, The founders of this scholarship will always be interested in your plans and progress.
