JOSEPH G. AND GLADYS’ V. SAWTELLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Joseph G. and Gladys V. Sawtelle Memorial Scholarship which you received this year was established by their son, Richard C. Sawtelle.
Joseph and Gladys were both raised in Melrose where they met and resided most of their life.
Joseph was employed in the printing business most all his life. Heran the Typesetters Machine Company for many years, before he founded the New England Linetype School of Boston, which trained both men and women for the printing trades.
Gladys was a graduate of the Teachers College of the City of Boston in 1924.
Before her marriage she taught
elementary school for several years in East Boston.
She devoted her early years to raising three sons and being a good housewife and mother.
She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Melrose Highlands Women’s Club.
This scholarship to be given in their names is to be awarded to a student in the senior class of Melrose High School who has a high academic standing and an indication of a firm commitment to a career in Nursing will receive specific consideration.
The Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund congratulates you upon receiving this Memorial Scholarship. The founder of this Scholarship will always be interested in your plans and future progress.
