MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL PERMANENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
THE MELISSA GILLIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in 2001.
Melissa Gillis was a 27 year old who passed away suddenly and totally unexpectedly in September 2001.
She was a graduate of Melrose High School class of 1992. She played field hockey and was Editor of the Log.
She went on to Harvard University and graduated with a degree in chemistry. She then went on to obtain her masters degree in education.
She taught chemistry at Newton North High School and her last job was as a biochemical instructor at Genetics Institute.
She was a very determined individual and worked tirelessly in any project or challenge that faced her.
We were privileged to have been part of her short life and we know she would have been so proud of the recipient who is to receive this scholarship.

Melissa Gillis was an instructor for the Genetics Institute in Andover and died suddenly on September 9, 2001 in Melrose, MA. Melissa was born and raised in Melrose. She graduated from Melrose High School with the class of 1992. She continued her education at Harvard University, where she completed her degree in Chemistry. She worked at MIT for a couple of years until taking a position at Newton North High School teaching chemistry. Melissa taught there for 2 years and recently she took on a position training biochemists at Genetics Institute in Andover. Melissa was a member of the Harvard Alumnus Assoc., was an avid reader, and enjoyed Mountain Biking.

Melissa Gillis Memorial Scholarship
Preference to a female student interested in pursuing the sciences as their area of study in college, the student should be in the top 10% of their class and the student should be involved in varsity sports and/or the yearbook. If a student cannot fill the above criteria, please choose a student who fills at least two of the criteria.
