RICHARD L. HILDRETH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Richard L. Hildreth Memorial Scholarship which you received this year was established by his wife, Rita M. Hildreth; his sons, Richard L. Hildreth, Jr. and Robert J. Hildreth: and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Hildreth was raised in Westford, Massachusetts and was a graduate of Westford Academy. He received a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a master’s degree in Education from Boston University.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and the Middle East as a meteorologist.

His teaching career began in Farmington, Connecticut. In 1948, he came to Melrose High School, serving for thirty-two years as a teacher, head of the Social Studies Department, and Coordinator of Social Studies. He instituted Student Government Day.

Upon retirement, he was nominated for an education award from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He was called a “Teacher of Teachers”.

Mr. Hildreth served on the executive board of the Parent(Teachers Association from 1960 – 1970. He was a trustee of the Melrose Public Library for twenty years, six of those years as Chairman. He was a member of the Incarnation Church. His entire professional life was dedicated to young people.

This scholarship to be given in his name is awarded to a student in the senior class of Melrose High School who possesses outstanding qualities of service to the community, responsible citizenship, and enthusiasm and loyalty to the American Way of Life.

The Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund congrat­ulates you upon receiving this memorial scholarship. The founders of this scholarship will always be interested in your plans and progress.
