Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund
THE RUTH R. LLOYD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in November 1966 by the family of Ruth F. Lloyd, wife of the Honorable Lawrence W. Lloyd, Mayor of Melrose.
Mrs. Lloyd was born in Melrose in 1905, the youngest girl in a family of nine children. She attended St. Mary’s High School and after graduation continued her education in business school. Thereafter, she was for a time employed at the Melrose Trust Company.
After her marriage, she aided the former mayor in managing the Lloyd Ice Company, and Later in the Lloyd Car Wash business.
After 1954, Mrs. Lloyd did all she could to assist her husband while he served as Mayor of Melrose for ten years.
Mrs. Loyd had one son, Peter, who graduated from Melrose High School and went on to Law School. Peter interrupted his Law School Studies to serve in the Vietnam War with the rank of Captain. Peter is at present a practicing attorney.
Throughout the Last months of her Life, Mrs. Loyd gave great strength and courage to others, despite the gravity of her illness, through her abiding religious faith.
