Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund
THE STEPHEN N. MONROE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP which you have received this year was established in 1969 by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Faank A. Monroe, Jr., high School classmates and friends.
Stephen was born in Melrose on October 16, 1949, He attended the Warren and Roosevelt Schools and graduated from Melrose High School in 1968. He continued his formal education by entering the freshman class at Northeastern University in September 1968. He had begun his Sophomore year at Northeastern when he passed away on October 16, 1969.
During his high school years, Stephen kept very busy with after School work, sports, and many Leisure recreational activities. He particularly enjoyed playing ice hockey in the Hockeytown League games, mostly at night. His favorite pastimes included skin diving, golf, and driving his early model Ford Mustang.
At Northeastern University he participated in the work-study program and enjoyed greatly his work at Turner Construction Company in Boston. He joined the R.0.T.C. while at Northeastern. Since those years were at the height of the Vietnam War, and even though he had no great Liking for military duty, he wanted to ready himself as much as possible in case he should be called up.
Stephen had a good personality, he was quiet but outgoing and he was popular with his peer group. His high school and college years were happy ones for him.
