The Mayers Family Scholarship was established by the children of Albert W Mayers Jr Ed.D,  and Joann Mayers and is awarded each year to a student who plans to attend a State School.

Our parents prioritized the value and affordability of formal education in our lives, as we were not wealthy.  Our parents believed that public higher education was the most realistic path for us. Our father was a lifelong teacher in the Melrose and Salem Public School systems. He was also an adjunct professor at Salem State, and finally, after retiring for a few years, he returned to teaching in Lawrence at a Catholic school. He was a member of the Melrose School Committee for over 15 years.

Our parents met while attending Bridgewater State. All three Mayers children attended Massachusetts State Colleges/University.  Two graduates of Salem State College/University, and one is a graduate of UMass Boston.  Beyond the coursework, graduating from college shows future employers you can successfully complete a lengthy task with multiple components. For many, it is mastering the skill of regularly working with others in a professional environment while learning to understand and appreciate the complexity of life. It would be a major disappointment to miss this opportunity due to fearing the cost before or being paralyzed with the debt afterward.
